IIT Bombay Academic Flexibility: Students Can Rethink Careers

IIT Bombay Academic Flexibility allows students to rethink their academic journey

IIT Bombay Academic Flexibility is allowing students to reconsider their academic direction after completing the first year of their undergraduate programme. The Centre for Multidisciplinary Education (CME), launched in 2024, enables students to move beyond a fixed academic path and combine subjects from different disciplines. Students can enrol in the four-year Bachelor of Science programme after completing one year in IIT Bombay’s mainstream engineering programmes. Depending on their area of study, they can pursue natural sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, or arts and design, along with a minor. The CME requires students to explore foundation areas including humanities and social sciences, design, management, economics, environmental and rural studies, and engineering. The model aims to help students discover their interests after experiencing college-level education rather than making permanent choices based only on their JEE rank. The first CME batch is expected to graduate in August 2027, marking an important step towards more flexible and multidisciplinary undergraduate education at IIT Bombay.
