US Student Visa Delays: What Indian Students Need to Know

US student visa delays affecting Indian students for Fall 2026 intake

US student visa delays are causing concern among Indian students preparing to join US universities for the Fall 2026 intake, with senators seeking answers from the State Department over appointment and processing issues. US student visa delays have become a concern for international students preparing for the Fall 2026 academic intake. Thirty US senators have asked the State Department to explain reported difficulties in securing timely appointments for F, M and J visas at some US embassies and consulates. The senators said delays could prevent students and exchange visitors from reaching the US before the start of the academic year. They have also sought information on how visa appointments are being allocated and whether student and exchange visitor applications have been given lower priority. Indian students are particularly affected by the issue, with around 3.6 lakh Indian students studying in the US during 2024-25. F visas cover academic students, M visas apply to vocational programmes and J visas cover approved exchange programmes. The senators have also raised questions about enhanced vetting, including online presence reviews for F, M and J visa applicants. Students planning to study in the US should therefore closely monitor appointment availability and visa-processing updates ahead of their university start dates.
