Sundar Pichai education journey from IIT Kharagpur to Google CEO

Sundar Pichai education journey shows how an engineering degree outside computer science, followed by advanced studies at Stanford and Wharton, helped to shape his path in becoming Google’s CEO. Sundar Pichai’s education journey is different from the conventional path associated with technology leaders. Pichai studied at IIT Kharagpur, but he did not pursue computer science. He completed his BTech in Metallurgical Engineering, building a strong foundation in engineering and technology. After IIT, Pichai moved to Stanford University, where he pursued a master’s degree in materials science and engineering. He later earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, adding business and management expertise to his technical background. Pichai joined Google in 2004 and went on to lead major products including Google Chrome and ChromeOS. His academic combination of engineering, advanced technology studies and business education contributed to his career progression, eventually leading to his appointment as Google CEO in 2015 and Alphabet CEO in 2019.
