NASA Moon Base Programme: Why India Is Being Invited

NASA Moon Base programme near lunar South Pole and India ISRO cooperation

NASA Moon Base programme aims to establish a long-term human presence near the lunar South Pole, with India being considered for a role through deeper NASA-ISRO cooperation. NASA Moon Base programme is an ambitious plan to establish humanity’s first long-term outpost on the lunar surface. NASA plans to build the base near the Moon’s South Pole in phases, beginning with robotic missions and technology demonstrations before expanding infrastructure for extended human operations. The programme is designed around international and commercial partnerships. NASA says countries that are part of the Artemis Accords will have opportunities to contribute technology, scientific payloads and infrastructure to different stages of the Moon Base. India’s participation could strengthen cooperation between ISRO and NASA in lunar exploration, human spaceflight, scientific research and advanced space technologies. The invitation comes as India and the US explore broader collaboration in civil and commercial space activities. For Indian students, the programme could create long-term opportunities in aerospace engineering, robotics, planetary science, space medicine, AI, materials science and lunar technologies. NASA says its Moon Base initiative is also expected to encourage students to pursue careers in science and engineering.
