IIT Guwahati Green Hydrogen: Low-Cost Nickel Catalyst

IIT Guwahati green hydrogen research using a low-cost nickel catalyst

IIT Guwahati green hydrogen research could support India’s efforts to develop cleaner and more affordable hydrogen production technologies. Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed a low-cost nickel-based catalyst that can split water to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. The team used an inexpensive nickel salt with an anthracene-based organic molecule instead of relying on rare and costly noble metals. The researchers developed the catalyst at room temperature using ultrasonic waves, creating a coordination polymer with a network of nickel atoms and organic molecules. The catalyst used nearly 88% of the supplied electrical energy for water splitting and remained stable during long-term operation. The researchers said its low cost and stability could help make water-based hydrogen production more efficient and scalable. The study, published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, could contribute to India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the wider transition towards cleaner energy technologies.
