AI Job Risks in India: Goldman Sachs Says Impact May Be Limited

AI job risks in India could remain relatively limited despite the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, according to Goldman Sachs’ chief India economist Santanu Sengupta. He said India’s large workforce is concentrated in physical and mechanical occupations, which are currently less exposed to AI-driven automation. Construction and retail together account for around 40% of India’s workforce, and these sectors have so far seen comparatively limited direct impact from AI. However, services are expected to experience greater disruption as AI adoption expands. The impact is likely to vary across sectors. Parts of finance, healthcare, education, and business services could benefit from AI, while substitution risks are higher in areas such as postal and telecommunications services and IT, particularly call-centre roles. Goldman Sachs estimates that carefully sequenced AI adoption could increase India’s overall productivity by around 0.4 percentage points over a 10-year period. The findings suggest that AI could reshape jobs rather than simply eliminate them, making digital skills and effective AI adoption increasingly important for India’s workforce.
