IIT Faculty Vacancies have reduced after more than 3,500 teaching posts were filled across 23 IITs between September 2022 and May 2026. The Centre informed the Lok Sabha that the recruitment was carried out through a mission-mode drive to address faculty shortages. However, the latest parliamentary response did not provide the current faculty-student ratio for individual IITs or a five-year breakdown of sanctioned, filled and vacant posts. An earlier government response had prescribed a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:10. The Centre said faculty recruitment remains a continuous process, with IITs issuing rolling advertisements throughout the year. Around 460 visiting faculty members are also currently involved across the IIT system. In August 2022, the 23 IITs had reported 4,596 vacant teaching positions, highlighting the scale of the earlier shortage.
