14-year-old Millie Pradawong is combining machine learning and CRISPR gene editing to explore cleaner and more efficient biofuel production. The US-based student has developed MACRO, short for Machine Learning-Augmented CRISPR Reprogramming Optimisation, as part of her research project. Microalgae can grow rapidly, absorb carbon dioxide and produce oils that can be converted into biofuel. However, increasing oil production can also slow algae growth. Millie’s project aims to address this challenge by using machine learning to predict how different gene edits could influence the organisms’ energy use. Her computational approach could help identify promising genetic changes before laboratory testing. Millie has also been selected as one of the 10 finalists in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge, highlighting the growing role of AI and biotechnology in student-led scientific research.
