Deepak Dhar AI Physics: Why AI Cannot Replace Scientists

Deepak Dhar discusses AI and the future of physics

Deepak Dhar AI Physics views highlight why artificial intelligence may transform scientific research but cannot replace human curiosity, reasoning and the search for understanding. Deepak Dhar AI Physics views have sparked an important debate about the future of science as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of solving equations, analysing research and making predictions. Dhar, a renowned theoretical physicist and recent Dirac Medal recipient, said AI can assist scientists but cannot replace the human search for understanding. Dhar argued that the purpose of science is not simply to obtain accurate answers or predictions. Scientists also want to understand why something happens and identify questions that are worth exploring. He compared AI’s impact with the arrival of calculators, which reduced the importance of performing complex arithmetic manually. Similarly, AI could make tasks such as solving equations, searching literature and improving writing easier. However, Dhar warned students against outsourcing their thinking to AI. Simply submitting an AI-generated solution may produce an answer but does not develop the reasoning skills that education is meant to build. According to Dhar, curiosity, creativity, asking meaningful questions and connecting ideas remain central to scientific discovery.
