ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme promoting digital and lifelong learning in India

ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme is redefining adult education in India by expanding literacy beyond reading and writing to include digital, financial, numeracy and other practical life skills. ULLAS Adult Literacy Programme is changing the way India approaches adult education by treating literacy as a broader set of skills needed for everyday life. Launched in 2022 under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the programme aims to promote lifelong learning and achieve full youth and adult literacy by 2030. Under ULLAS, literacy extends beyond basic reading and writing to include numeracy, digital literacy and financial literacy, helping learners to become more independent in their daily lives. The programme uses volunteers, community learning centres, digital platforms and a mobile application to reach learners across the country. The initiative has reportedly reached more than 2.8 crore learners with around 45 lakh volunteers. India has also recorded an increase in literacy, with rural literacy rising from 67.7% in 2011 to 77.5% in 2023–24.
