Indian Students Study Abroad Return to India plans indicate that overseas education does not necessarily translate into a long-term intention to settle abroad. A recent Oxford International survey found that 81% of Indian students planning to study overseas intend to return to India after completing their courses. The survey also found that nearly nine in 10 respondents were the first members of their families to pursue education abroad. For many students, international education appears to be viewed as an opportunity to gain global academic exposure, skills and experience before building their careers in India. The findings come as India’s overseas student population has expanded significantly. Government-linked data cited in the Economic Survey shows that the number of Indians studying abroad rose from about 6.85 lakh in 2016 to more than 18 lakh by 2025. The trend highlights a changing approach to international education, with students increasingly considering overseas study as a pathway for global exposure rather than permanent migration.
