AI in Skill Education: Karnataka’s Plan Replacing Third Language Faces Opposition

AI in Skill Education will be introduced in 1,652 selected government high schools across Karnataka from the 2026–27 academic year under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). Students in Classes 9 and 10 will be able to opt for Artificial Intelligence as a vocational subject in place of the third language in these schools. The Karnataka government says the initiative aims to equip students with future-ready digital and employability skills aligned with industry needs. However, the Karnataka High School Hindi Teachers’ Association has opposed the move, arguing that replacing the third language could affect language education and teachers’ employment. The association has urged the government to reconsider the decision, while education officials maintain that the programme is intended to strengthen skill-based learning and prepare students for emerging technology-driven careers.
