Hindi Music Therapy is offering new hope for stroke survivors with speech impairments. Researchers from IIT Delhi, AIIMS New Delhi and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) have developed the first Hindi version of Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), a music-based rehabilitation technique that uses melody and rhythm to restore speech. Unlike direct translations, the therapy has been specially adapted to match the rhythm, stress and cadence of the Hindi language. In a pilot study involving six Hindi-speaking stroke survivors, participants completed 40 therapy sessions and showed significant improvements in speech fluency, sentence formation and everyday communication. Researchers believe Hindi Music Therapy could transform stroke rehabilitation for millions of Hindi-speaking patients, though larger clinical studies are needed to validate the findings.
