Karnataka Visual Arts departments are facing growing challenges due to faculty shortages and inadequate infrastructure, affecting the quality of higher education in fine arts. The Visual Arts departments at several Karnataka universities are facing significant challenges due to a lack of permanent faculty, inadequate infrastructure, and declining institutional support. The department, established in 2004, has only four permanent professors against 11 teaching positions at Bengaluru City University despite rising student enrolment. Students of painting, sculpture and graphic arts and applied arts have expressed concerns about the shortage of specialized classrooms and studios and modern equipment for practical learning. Experts warn that if faculty are not recruited in time and infrastructure improved, the quality of visual arts education will continue to deteriorate. Academicians have urged the state government and university authorities to strengthen the departments of the creative sector that have immense potential to generate employment and preserve India’s rich artistic heritage.
