IIT Mandi Plant Anaesthesia Study Reveals How Plants React to Anaesthesia

IIT Mandi Plant Anaesthesia Study has revealed how plants respond to anaesthesia, providing new insights into plant biology and cellular processes in a very systematic manner even though they do not have a brain and nervous system. Scientists have used advanced live-cell microscopy to study tomato and brinjal plants and found that in anaesthesia, their cellular structures shut down in a specific sequence and when the effect wore off, they recovered in reverse order. The study also found thousands of plant cell nuclei rearranged simultaneously, suggesting a coordinated biological response. The findings don’t prove that plants are conscious, but they offer new insights into how living organisms function at the cellular level. Scientists think the research could lead to a better understanding of consciousness and spur further studies in a variety of living organisms.
