A Clear Vision for Success: Why Optometry Is a Career to Consider

Optometry is a health care profession concerned with eye care and vision correction and is growing rapidly. Students with Class 12 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics are eligible for admission to a Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom) program, which is usually four years in length, followed by a one-year clinical internship, depending on the school. Admission is generally on the merit of Class 12 and NEET is not mandatory for most colleges. The well-known institutions offering optometry programmes are AIIMS centres, Sri Ramachandra Institute, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Sankara Nethralaya and various state universities. Graduates may work in hospitals, eye clinics, optical chains, research centres, community eye-care programmes or establish private practice. Screen use has grown and there is more awareness of eye health; so there are great career opportunities and long-term professional development in optometry.
