On World Environment Day, seed conservationists in Gujarat are working to preserve indigenous crop varieties that are steadily disappearing due to the growing use of commercial hybrid seeds. These dedicated “seed saviours” gather, store and share native seeds through community seed banks and farmer’s networks. Their work helps in the conservation of traditional varieties of millets, pulses and vegetables which are naturally adapted to the local conditions and the challenges of climate. They support organic farming and maintain important genetic diversity that contributes to food security and sustainable agriculture. The movement also protects the traditional farming knowledge passed down through generations. Experts agree that protecting native seeds is important in building climate resilience and a diverse, nutritious and sustainable food system for generations to come.
