Akshar: Free AI Keyboard Supporting 21 Indian Languages

What started as a father’s attempt to help his son with his Kannada homework has become an innovative language tool for millions. Bengaluru-based developer Krishna Permi has built a free iPhone keyboard app that supports 21 Indian languages called Akshar. The app is powered by IndicXlit technology from AI4Bharat, enabling users to type Indian languages phonetically using English letters. Akshar works fully offline, doesn’t need an internet connection and doesn’t collect user data, which makes it privacy-friendly unlike many keyboards. The app also supports several languages which are not used as widely like Bodo, Kashmiri, Dogri and Sanskrit. Akshar is helping more people to communicate comfortably in their mother tongues, with its focus on accessibility, privacy and language inclusion.
